About Ghost Fishing

The problem of ghost fishing gear has reached public prominence over the past five years. It is a normal part of fishing that nets, shellfish traps and other equipment becomes lost. This is not a deliberate or careless act on behalf of the fishing community, simply a reality of a very harsh environment. The problem is that the lost gear continues to catch marine life. This has an undocumented effect on the local ecosystem, but is clearly undesirable in any sense. Animals are being needlessly killed.

Ghost Fishing was set up to try to remove this lost equipment from the marine environment. It is a challenging and difficult task. Ghost gear is typically entangled in reefs and wrecks, and its removal can be complicated. The technique involves attaching bags to the gear, which the diver fills with air, making them float. The divers then cut the gear free as close to the seabed as possible. Great care is needed to ensure that the diver does not become entangled with the equipment. This involves a high degree of teamwork, coordination and discipline.

Cardiff Scuba – Shetland Liveaboard Trip August 2018

Monday, May 22nd, 2017

Following their very successful trip to Scapa Flow in April 2017 on the MV Valkyrie (owned and operated by Hazel and Helen with their crew of Orkney & Shetland Dive Charters), Cardiff Scuba have booked another trip with them again for the week of the 11th August 2018.

In addition, Cardiff Scuba have also booked Orkney & Shetland’s new liveaboard, the MV Valhalla for the same week.

The exciting news is that both these liveaboards will take them to dives in the Shetland Isles (not Scapa Flow) and will give space for 24 divers!

The Shetlands are an amazing place to dive, with wrecks for all levels of experience. The initial plan is to have one boat for experienced divers to take deeper dives and the other boat will house the less experienced divers and offer dives of suitable depths.

For this trip all divers must be at least Advanced Openwater (or equivalent), with Deep, Wreck and Dry Suit certification. Enriched Air certification would also be advantageous. Divers need to have a minimum of 50 verifiable dives in UK waters. You must also be proficient in the deployment of an SMB.

Experienced technical divers are very welcome on OC or CCR .

There are already a number of interested divers and Cardiff Scuba are taking names immediately to assess the response to the trip.

Prices have not yet been confirmed but the general plan will be to drive to Aberdeen, take the overnight Ferry to Lerwick, be met at the Ferry by the Dive Charter and have a week of amazing diving.

Travel to Aberdeen can be organised as a group or individuals can make their own arrangements.

When they have more confirmed prices, Cardiff Scuba will let everyone know.

Please don’t miss this opportunity! Let them know you are interested and Cardiff Scuba can keep you informed so you can make a final decision to commit to a place.

For any further information, call Rob or Simon at Cardiff Scuba on 029 2061 5161
