| Health
& safety gone mad team nominated
for the Council Worker of the Year Awards 2009.
You may of read
the news article earlier in the year about the team of council officials
taking the plunge in the icy waters of the National Diving &
Activity Centre. more>
Dubbing themselves “Health And Safety Gone Mad”,
they are on a mission to convince us the nanny state is not stopping
us being adventurous. Roger Garbett, Keith Leslie, Haydn Brookes
and Rhys Thomas, of the Forest of Dean District Council’s environmental
health department, are fed-up with taking the blame for bosses who
do not want to put up Christmas decorations or poor organisers who
cannot arrange a pancake race.
The team were nominated for the award by the
Leader of the Council to recognise that they operate over and above
their job, showing leadership and innovation in tackling some of
the complex issues that worry and concern local people, using their
free time to reinforce the message that health and safety is about
saving lives, not stopping them.
Roger explains more about Health and Safety
Gone Mad:
In
our own time we've embarked on a unique campaign to show that
by using sensible risk management, traditional play, adventure,
eccentricity and fun can continue to thrive in the UK. We offer
help to small organisations who put on 'risky' traditional events
and leading
by example we've been joining in! We also highlight inaccurate
health and safety stories in the media in a way that should make
you smile. We think that by using sensible risk management ordinary
people can do extraordinary things and we are here to prove it
to you!
